Album – Femme Fatale

Weirdney is Britney at her finest. When an established popstar has as many hits to their name as Spears, they can feel emboldened to take risks and explore genres, structures, and productions that step way outside the box. Blackout was a lot of things: exciting, innovative, but also downright strange at times. And that is part of the reason it is a masterpiece. Spears has a very quirky streak, and when it shines through on record, it is art. The bubbly, sputtery pop masterpiece that is “How I Roll” is one of her greatest though little-known accomplishments. Her vocals make up a large part of the song’s busy instrumentation, filled with breaths, hums, and “ba-dee-dums.” The wordplay is among some of her best: “Show your knee socks/Put tequila on the rocks/Till you make your body pops to the speaker.” Whereas Spears’s vocals on the verses seem to serve almost as additional percussion, the segue into the interlude sounds like a euphoric counterpoint: “If you know what it takes to be my man/We can go make love together.” Also, things get a bit naughty when she follows up with “You can be my f*ck tonight.” Or is it “thug?” (Please be the former). The song also resulted in one of the most joyous segments of the Femme Fatale Tour. While never released as a single, it is likely the most influential and forward-thinking track on the album, foreshadowing a shift away from the EDM-heavy hits of the early ‘10s to more laid-back pop tracks like Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next.” It’s no wonder that, despite Femme Fatale yielding much bigger and more recognizable hits, this particular track was selected multiple times to be included among the best of the decade.
