British-ney strikes again, this time in one of the most well executed novelty songs of the 21st century. Spears puts her speak-singing chops to work here to great effect in one of her kitschiest, most quotable dance tracks. “You want a hot body?/You want a Bugatti?/You want a Maserati?/You better work bitch.” Fans hoped that will.i.am’s production savvy would help give Britney Jean an edge over her dance diva peers, but unfortunately “Work Bitch” was one of the only songs where he truly delivered. The electro house song hits harder than some of Spears’s more explosive offerings and forever gave her the perfect show opener, rightfully topping the setlist of her Piece of Me Vegas residency and world tour. Its chart momentum was slightly marred by a lazy radio edit – the fact that “Work Work” loses so much of its zing reveals how much the track relies on its cheeky title. Still, “Work Bitch” reminded us all how Spears could still make notable contributions to the pop lexicon 15 years into her career.
