“Na na na come on!” Spears hopped on to this uptempo romp by Rihanna in 2011, and rarely has there ever been such a vibrant and joyous ode to sadomasochism set to music. The solo version originally appeared on Rihanna’s Loud album, and she was generous with the real estate she provided to Britney, giving her about half the vocals. Spears’s crowning moment is in the climax (pun intended) of the middle eight: “And meet me in my boudoir/Make my body say ah, ah, ah!/I like it, like it.” Both singers sound like they’re having a rollicking good time, and importantly, they never take themselves too seriously. With lyrics like “Sticks and stones may break my bones/But chains and whips excite me,” the song was deemed too risqué for daytime airplay in the UK, yet seemingly received the stamp of approval in the US despite the notoriously prudish American airwaves, securing Rihanna her 10th and Spears her 5th number 1 single. Unfortunately, the duo never teamed up for a music video, but did share the stage to deliver a Billboard Music Award performance highlight in 2011. Spears also recognized the strength of this song, including her own solo version on the setlist for the Femme Fatale Tour. Though a shared credit, this song is a worthy addition to the Britney catalogue.
