Shania Twain and her then husband Mutt Lange were responsible for some of the most popular and memorable country pop ballads of the late 90s. Teaming up with Spears resulted in an offering that would have fit in nicely with Twain’s own Come On Over alongside “You’re Still the One” and “From This Moment On.” Her adlibs in the closing chorus of “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know” are among her best. An early favorite, Spears heavily promoted the song during the album rollout showcasing some of her best live vocals, and it even reappeared for her 2011 Femme Fatale Tour, a rare reoccurrence for a Britney ballad. Released as the album’s fourth single, it received a steamy video treatment directed by the late Herb Ritts. Up to that point Spears’s videos had been regularly featured on the Disney Channel, but was clearly this was aimed at an older audience. The track may have underperformed on the charts, but rightly remains a fan favorite.
