Album: In the Zone
Heavily promoted during the album rollout, Britney fans had every reason to expect that “(I Got That) Boom Boom” was going to be a single – in fact it was rumored to be the second single until Spears pushed hard for “Toxic.” One of the few tracks on the album where Spears doesn’t have a writing credit, her low and sultry voice is well suited for the hip-hop infused beat. The banjo is a nice touch that re-emphasizes that this song is “for all those Southern boys out there.” The Ying Yang Twins were at their peak, fresh off the success of their single “Salt Shaker,” though they add little to the song. It was an emphatic statement that Spears would not be pigeonholed in bubblegum pop, and the track fits in nicely with the other club-friendly content that fills In the Zone. That doesn’t change the fact that “Toxic” was absolutely the right choice for the second single – I mean, since it wasn’t released as the first.
