Album: In the Zone

No one was having more fun than Britney was on the In the Zone album. Mentioned by Spears as being one of her favorite songs on the album, “The Hook Up” has one of the most infectious beats on the track list and a decidedly Jamaican vibe. Spears – who co-wrote the song along with some of the masterminds behind “Me Against the Music” – alternates between belting the verses and speak-singing the bridge before letting her falsetto shine on the chorus and on the very solid middle eight. The song is a highlight of the Onyx Hotel Tour where Britney dances barefoot in her “Mystic Garden” dress surrounded by a jungle themed set. The high-octane dance routine captures the undeniable energy of the piece. On an album where so many of the songs are single-worthy, this is another case where Spears had a plausible hit single on her hands, but was passed over in favor of some of its stiff competition.
