Album: Lucky – Single / Oops!... I Did It Again
“This is a story about a girl named Lucky.” One of Spears’s most recognizable early offerings, the legacy of “Lucky” has taken on a whole new meaning as fans draw parallels to the singer’s own experiences and challenges with unimaginable fame. Hell, she even played Lucky in the music video (in a dual role alongside… herself!), which only makes it more impossible not to connect those lines. Yet another Max Martin tune, this song has a specific 60s girl group aesthetic that is executed in a way where the audience can appreciate the throwback while the track still seamlessly sits alongside some more forward-thinking pop numbers. The song is well-written and Spears is in all of her nasal glory (said with love!). Perhaps exacerbated by the fact that the titular character is the song is literally named Lucky, it feels like it skews a bit young at a time when Britney herself seemed anxious to emphasize her maturity.
