41. Before the Goodbye (2001)

Album: Britney (Deluxe/International Editions)

Clubney has entered the chat. Spears co-wrote “Before the Goodbye” with Brian Transeau, Josh Schwartz, and Brian Kierulf, and it was rumored to be designated as the lead track to Britney before “I’m a Slave 4 U” was ultimately chosen. While both options were non-conventional, “Slave” probably made a bit more sense considering the contemporary radio market at the time. That said, I would contend that this would have made an excellent replacement for “That’s Where You Take Me,” which tends to be the weakest link on the standard edition. “Before the Goodbye” starts with a stuttering acoustic guitar and slowly builds to the chorus. As Spears’s vocals soar (complete with a gospel choir), so does the energy level, until the acoustic sound gives way to a full on rave in what could be considered foreshadowing for her upcoming club-ready projects. Yet another gem hidden as a bonus track. More people should hear this song.
