Album: Do Somethin’ – Single / Greatest Hits: My Prerogative

Jive never intended “Do Somethin’” to be a single, but Spears was enamored enough with the song to push her label into letting her shoot a video for it. Another Bloodshy and Avant dance-pop jam, one could see hints of late 70s rock or new wave. It features Britney at her most brazen lyrically, speak-singing commands through most of the song. It also marks the first time Britney drops an F-bomb in a song. The best part about this track is how Spears does not appear to take herself too seriously in the song or the accompanying video. The music video itself marks a couple milestones for Spears who makes her directorial debut (billed as Mona Lisa alongside Billie Woodruff), and also choreographed the video herself. The single was never officially released in the US, but still managed to chart based on digital sales alone. The track tends to be a bit polarizing among listeners, but there is no question how much Britney herself likes it. And her joy, captured in her animated vocals and high energy video, is absolutely infectious and can make a believer out of the naysayers. And to those who refuse to give in, “Get your own space and do somethin’!”
