Album: Blackout
I think a case could be made for this to be in Spears’s top 10, and depending on the day, I might find myself placing it there myself. Pitchfork, a well-renowned and notoriously snobbish music publication, hailed this as the centerpiece of Blackout, evoking imagery of the “Black Lodge” from the 1990 David Lynch classic Twin Peaks (coincidentally, a show about exposing dark secrets that challenge the image of girl-next-door innocence that was put up on a pedestal). The song is certainly a weird and wild ride. The track feels like a trippy, freaky dream sequence set to an infectious dance groove. Danja lends his own vocals which are stretched into a warped moan, contributing to the spooky if captivating atmosphere. It’s a bold track, and one I would suspect many popstars don’t have the guts or the intuition to record. Britney at her weirdest is often at her best, and this absolutely came out of left field, but we are here for it.
