Album: Femme Fatale
Why wasn’t this a single? Femme Fatale has several unjustly overlooked tracks, but “Inside Out” is one of the more egregious examples. On an album with no true ballads, this delicious, dubstep-infused midtempo ode to sex with the ex is as slow as it gets. The climactic “Come on!” leading into the self-referential chorus is one of the best moments on the album. While pop radio was focused squarely on uptempo dance tracks in the early 2010s (save for Adele, of course), “Inside Out” was one of a couple excellent Femme Fatale cuts that could have been at the forefront of the midtempo shift that began mid-decade. On top not getting the single treatment, it didn’t even get a live performance, being passed over during the Femme Fetale Tour for some lesser tracks. The song still sounds fresh and unique a decade later. Sorry, “Criminal,” but this should have been the fourth single. The only other acceptable alternatives would have been “He About to Lose Me” and the innovative “How I Roll.”
