Album: Slumber Party – Single / Glory
The listening public has slept on a few killer Britney singles over the years, but few were as unjustly overlooked as “Slumber Party.” A laid-back R&B track with a reggae flair, it sounds like Spears’s take on Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” This slumber party ain’t your seventh-grade sleepover, though. Spears coos about sex, drugs, and clawfoot tubs over a punctuated marimba and a swelling orchestral section. Her sultry vocals are on point, delivering some excellent adlibs in the second half of the song. The production is lush, and when the horn section kicks in for the final chorus, Britney really takes us home. “Slumber Party” is the crown jewel of the Glory standard edition tracklist and probably would have been the better lead single. Tinashe’s appearance on the single release doesn’t add or detract from the original, but the sexy, colorful video is one of the best is Spears’s vast catalogue. Without the benefit of the album’s early promotion, the single and the era lost steam.
