(Spears, Martin, Yacoub)
Album: Britney
I’m not sure I’ll ever get over the injustice of this pop gem getting passed over as a single. Written by Spears along with the songwriting team of Max Martin and Rami, “Cinderella” has Britney rejecting the fairytale trope in favor of her own independence. It’s Britney the feminist! It’s Britney decisively rebuffing the “princess” imagery that was always thrust upon her. And on top of it all, that beat absolutely slaps. Her vocals are strong and appropriately dramatic, and the middle eight includes one of the best spoken-word breakdowns ever set to music (eerily layered on Max Martin’s on vocals and culminating with the emphatic “I won’t return to thee!” – Brilliant!). It’s infectious and danceable, and its story feels like it is begging to be made into a music video. So it’s a shame that not only was “Cinderella” not released as a single, there was never even a live performance of the song. While relegated to the status of a hidden classic, perhaps we should appreciate that Britney blessed us with the song at all.
