(Elofsson, Magnusson, Kreuger, Martin) Album: (You Drive Me) Crazy – Single / Drive Me Crazy (Soundtrack) / …Baby One More Time
In late summer 1999, Britney dropped her third single from her debut album. Well – sort of from her debut album. The song originally appeared as Track 2 on …Baby One More Time, but the version serviced to American radio was re-recorded with a bolder, brassier production that packed more punch and showcased more of Britney’s then-trademark vocal stylings. The song is simple in formula and its lyrics are not exactly poetic, but that is half its charm. In that way, it’s similar to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Not necessarily groundbreaking, but executed with near perfection, it’s an exuberant earworm that has become a mainstay and emblematic of the late 90s bubblegum pop explosion. While we certainly have a soft spot for the cowbell-heavy album cut – that funkified production with a sweetly delivered middle eight and semi-bizarre electric guitar solo – it’s the raucous Stop Remix that we will always hold closest to our hearts.
