Album: Glory (Deluxe/International Editions)
It’s like Spears’s quirky Instagram feed came to life. We love Britney at her weirdest, and “If I’m Dancing” is one of her strangest and finest moments. British-ney makes her finest appearance in what seems like a sequel to 2011’s “How I Roll.” It’s more experimental than anything on the standard edition tracklist of Glory, melding multiple genres into this bouncy, dreamy EDM-inspired ditty. Lyrically it gets a bit Dadaist and is filled with nonsensical gibberish on par with “I Want It That Way.” Few of her other songs capture pure exuberance like this whimsical bop. It served as an interlude during Spears’s Piece of Me Tour, and the eruption of joy from the audience was palpable. It also became a meme-tastic viral phenomenon during Glory’s release. It’s no wonder that, of all 17 tracks available on the original deluxe version of the album, this is the one that gained most traction with critics, with Vulture.com citing it as one “6 best new songs of the week” on August 30, 2016. It’s a shame so few are aware of this effervescent treasure.
