Covers are always a tricky thing. Especially with well-known pop standards. ESPECIALLY ones as beloved as the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Devo caused a stir with their radical spastic reworking that eventually garnered its own devotees. Spears takes a funkified pop approach, adding some bounce to the rock anthem. The production, rife with digitized record scratching, comes off as too light for the song’s content, failing to build the drama the song calls for. That said, Spears’s vocals and adlibs are top notch on this track. The rendition featured in her 2000 Video Music Awards medley performance is vastly superior to the album cut. Talk about bringing the drama!
