(Spears, Christy, Spock, Edwards, Midnight)
Album: In the Zone
Often overshadowed (no pun intended) by “Everytime,” this other In the Zone ballad is more of a vocal showcase. Written by Spears along with Lauren Christy, Scott Spock, Graham Edwards, and Charlie Midnight, Britney flaunts her range on this song, from her sultry low notes to her trademark falsetto. Her yearning for a decidedly distant lover is a stark tempo and mood shift when it’s surrounded by club-ready bops. This feels like it would have made a better Britney track than In the Zone, though the Matrix’s production adds some strings and an atmospheric electropop vibe bring it a little closer to tying it in with the rest of the line-up. Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful moment, and Spears providing her own harmonies during the middle eight is one of my favorite Britney vocal moments.
