116. Everybody (2007)

(Rotem, Bogart, Lennox, Stewart)

Album: Blackout (Deluxe/International Editions)

In 1983, the Eurythmics released “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” an innovative new wave track and a landmark moment in pop music history. It’s been sampled at least a hundred different times since, and with good reason! Had Blackout been conceived in the early 80s, this is what it likely would have sounded like, with its dueling synths and ominous, yet forward thinking production. J.R. Rotem and Spears transform the decades old song into a super-catchy club anthem, complete with lasers and a spoken-word breakdown. Spears got in touch with Rotem to do a song together after hearing “S.O.S.” by Rihanna (with another famous 80s sample), and you can see where the inspiration is here. Ultimately, this makes a great bonus track, but Blackout benefited from giving priority to more adventurous and innovative songs rather than focusing on replicating the success of other 2006 hits. Interestingly, this is one of the rare moments where the rawer, harder-hitting demo actually surpasses the original.
