Interestingly, the album closer to Spears’s debut, while a Sonny and Cher cover, actually gave some interesting insight into what the future trajectory of her career would look like. With its trip-hop influence, “The Beat Goes On” is more club-ready than the majority of tracks on the album. It’s also one of the few songs where we do not find a heartbroken Spears pining for a lost love or shrinking away from a prospective lover. Not necessarily in a rank with other Britney classics, but an important moment.
