(Spears, Pentz, Furler, Swanson, Perry)
Album: Britney Jean
“Passenger” is an interesting Britney moment, and one of the few times on Britney Jean that showcased vulnerability on what had been misleadingly hyped to be her most personal offering to date. Spears and Katy Perry both have co-writing credits, and it is one of the more solid melodies on the album. The song’s major issue is that it is exceedingly overproduced. It has an over 30-second intro of what amounts to electronic ambient sounds increasing to a crescendo before the beat drops and the vocals kick in. By far the best mix of this song was an acoustic by Nick* & Country Club Martini Crew that used rawer Spears vocals on the verses with Sia on the chorus. Ultimately, the song comes off as a good idea that resulted in a slight misfire upon execution.
